New Air Quality Monitoring Begins In North Kilworth

The effect the burning of solid fuels is having on air quality is being monitored for the first time in the Harborough District.
A special device has been installed in North Kilworth, which is one of several villages with no mains gas, with more people burning solid fuel as their main heat source.
Harborough District Council received government funding for the equipment, which can detect tiny airborne particles from things like wood burners, after a successful joint-bid for £27,000-worth of funding with North West Leicestershire Council.
The project also aims to raise awareness among residents of how they can help to reduce particulates in the air.

A survey has also been launched to discover people’s habits and knowledge around burning solid fuel. Participants have a chance to be entered into a prize draw to win shopping vouchers and tickets for local leisure attractions.

Councils have a duty to monitor air quality and put plans in place to improve it where it is found to be lower than required levels.
