National Grid Begins Safety Inspections in Market Harborough Area

National Grid Electricity Distribution is visiting homes and small businesses in Market Harborough and nearby villages as part of a safety inspection programme.

Customers in the LE16 postcode area will receive visits from approved contractors to check service termination points, also known as cut-outs, where the main electricity cable and fuse are located.

In most modern properties, these are in an external meter cabinet, though in older homes they may be inside.

Inspectors will carry out visual checks only, recording details and taking photos. No disassembly is required, and electricity supplies will not be interrupted.

The inspections are part of a rolling 20-year programme, aiming to check around 400,000 cut-outs each year across the Midlands, South West, and South Wales.

The work ensures equipment remains safe and supports the connection of low-carbon technologies such as electric vehicle chargers and solar panels.

Inspectors will be clearly identifiable and able to show ID. Customers also have the option to take their own photos of their cut-out and meter and send them to National Grid, who will assess whether a follow-up visit is needed.

Richard Brady, policy engineer for the programme, said: “These visits underline our commitment to safety while helping plan for the energy needs of the future. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience to customers.”
