The erection of Christmas Lights on Church Street in Market Harborough didn’t quite go according to plan yesterday, after a man got stuck seven metres in the air for around two hours.

Fire crews were called to rescue him after the cherry picker being used by Harborough Council contractors malfunctioned just after 2pm.

An aerial ladder platform vehicle from Leicester was sent to the scene to safely bring the man down to the ground after firefighters from Market Harborough initially attended.

Angela Denison, Manager of the Nags Head pub on Church Street, told Hfm quite a crowd gathered and applauded when the man was brought down.

New cross-street lights were being installed after outcry last year when the traditional displays didn’t go up for health and safety reasons, prompting over 1,000 people signing a petition.

Harborough Council say plans are being put in place so the installation of the lights can be completed during the next few days, in time for the Switch On event on Friday.
