Long Delays As Traffic Lights Upgrade Begins

Written by on 23rd October 2023

The start of work to upgrade traffic lights on one of Market Harborough’s busiest roads has resulted in long delays for drivers.

Temporary traffic lights have been put in place at the junction with the Sainsbury’s car park, while the main signals are replaced.

Long queues on Springfield Street

There have been long queues on Springfield Street today, with a knock-on effect along Northampton Road and Welland Park Road.

The work by Leicestershire County Council is set to take three weeks.

A spokesperson told HFM: “The traffic signal equipment in Springfield Street is being replaced as part of our renewal programme.

“Traffic signal installations generally have a ‘design life’ of approximately 15-20 years, after which it is standard practice to replace them to reduce maintenance costs and fault occurrences, as well as improving the reliability and efficiency of the lights.

“Newer traffic signal technology also have lower energy consumption, which in turn reduces carbon dioxide emissions.”
