Leicester City: Factfile

Leicester City Football Club is a professional football club based in Leicester, England, who currently compete in the Premier League, which is the top division of English football. Nicknamed the ‘Foxes’, Leicester currently play their home games at the King Power Stadium, a 32,243 all-seater capacity ground, and have done so since 2002 since moving away from Filbert Street, which was their original home. Leicester have enjoyed a tremendous rise through the divisions over the last decade or so, going from a side that had plummeted to the depths of League One to a club that now finds itself amongst one of the most competitive that English football has to offer.

Since joining the Football League in 1894, Leicester City have always played their football in either the first or second tier of English football barring one season, which was the one aforementioned campaign that they spent playing in League One in 2008/09. However, they were instantly promoted as champions and don’t look likely to return to the third tier any time soon. Leicester’s fortunes really took an upturn when the club was bought by Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha in 2010, where a number of competitive showings in the Championship and two episodes of playoff heartbreak eventually resulted in Leicester being promoted to the Premier League as champions in 2013/14, losing just three games in the 46-game season. 

If that wasn’t hard enough for some to believe, the club then managed to survive relegation in dramatic fashion after going on an incredible end of season run, though manager Nigel Pearson – who had taken the club up from the depths of League One – was relieved of his duties. He was replaced by Claudio Ranieri, who took the club to heights nobody would’ve ever dreamed of. Leicester City were crowned Premier League champions in 2015/16, in what many describe as the greatest story in the history of English football. It made stars of the likes of N’Golo Kante and Riyad Mahrez, who were later sold for huge money transfers, while leading scorer Jamie Vardy is now arguably Leicester City’s most famous face. 

A run to the quarter-finals of the Champions League came in the following season and the club have managed to solidify themselves as a competitive force in the Premier League in the campaigns that have followed since. The tragic death of Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha in a helicopter crash in 2018 shook the club to its core, but they have been able to continue the progress that was started by the chairman and his family in the time that has passed since. Now breeding through a wealth of exciting young talent mixed with experienced heads that were part of the title-winning campaign, manager Brendan Rodgers certainly has a lot going for him at the King Power Stadium in the years to come.
