Inscription Set To Be Renewed On Town Centre War Memorial

The main inscription on the War Memorial in Market Harborough town centre is set to be renewed.

Weathering since the monument’s installation over a hundred years ago has left the wording virtually illegible and it is proposed to overlay it with the same inscription, hand-carved on slate.

Harborough District Council wants to carry out the work alongside a major clean of the WW1 memorial, which was unveiled and dedicated on The Square in September 1921.

Planning permission is needed before any work can be carried out, as the structure is protected monument.

A document provided with the planning application reads: “The existing inscription is likely to weather further over the coming years to the point where it is completely illegible if no action is taken, the proposal for the plaque will provide longevity of the inscription for the residents and visitors of Market Harborough to view for years to come.

“The hand cut inscription work will be completed off site once the setting out of the inscription has been agreed.

“Once complete the plaque will be installed sympathetically with stainless steel hidden fixings. The plaque will be fitted following the hot water clean of the war memorial which was previously completed over 10 years ago.”
