‘Hit & Run’ Driver Causes Major Damage To Cemetery

A ‘hit and run’ driver has caused major damage to the cemetery in Foxton.

Around 15 graves and headstones were struck during incident on Saturday evening, with some damaged beyond repair.

The person involved crashed through fencing at the entrance to the site on Main Street and drove over a large area before driving off.

It is thought it happened sometime between 6pm and 9.30pm, with some parts of the vehicle left at the scene.

The incident has left relatives of people buried and the cemetery very upset and Leicestershire Police have launched an investigation.

Harborough District Council has been assessing the damage and its officers are working to notify relatives of the graves affected.

Cllr Darren Woodiwiss, cabinet member with responsibility for cemeteries, spoke to HFM:

The council has also been carrying out safety testing of grave headstones to check they are stable.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them on 101.
