Town Council Plan Receives Initial Backing

The plan to create a town council in Market Harborough has moved forward after councillors gave their initial backing.

The move is being proposed ahead of likely local government re-organisation, which could see Harborough District council scrapped and replaced with a new authority covering a much wider area.

Unlike other parts of the district, Market Harborough is ‘un-parished,’ meaning it is directly managed by HDC.

A town council could take-on responsibilities like managing some open spaces and organising community events like the Christmas Lights Switch-On and is seen as a way of ensuring residents’ voices continue to be heard at a local level.

Cllr Buddy Anderson represents Great Bowden and Arden Ward and spoke at this week’s meeting of the Market Harborough Special Expenses Advisory Panel, which voted to back the progression of the idea:

A detailed report on the idea of the town council and wider work on a potential Community Governance Review for the whole District will bw presented to the council’s Cabinet for consideration.
