Market Harborough’s Historic Ambulance Station To Be Put Up For Sale

Market Harborough’s historic Ambulance Station is to be put up for sale.

St John Ambulance is to sell the building on Abbey Street, due to the financial impact of the pandemic on the charity’s finances.

It has used the base for nearly a hundred years, after it was purpose-built for the then St John Ambulance Association in 1924.

Just two months ago, the ambulance station was given grade-two listed status, after Historic England deemed it one of the last surviving buildings of its kind in the country.

St John Ambulance’s operational support director, Mark Squires said: “I’d like to assure everyone that we are acutely aware of this beautiful building’s listed status and will continue to take great care of it, as our volunteers move out ahead of the property’s sale.

“It’s always sad to say goodbye to properties – especially one with such a proud history as our base in Market Harborough – but the financial impact of the pandemic has made us take some difficult decisions to reduce our charity’s running costs.

“Despite these premises’ closure, St John Ambulance remains active in the local area. We will continue supporting the community through first aid, training, and other work that helps improve people’s health and saves lives.”

Designed by architect Herbert George Coales in Queen Anne Revival style, the building features high quality brickwork, glazed tiles and retains its original folding garage doors – which very rare.
