Campaigners in Market Harborough are backing a week of action calling on the government to do more to tackle food poverty.

Campaigners gathered on Church Square

They gathered in the town centre yesterday to throw their weight behind the ‘End UK Hunger’ campaign, including volunteers involved with the town’s Jubilee Foodbank.

They see first-hand the problem locally and last year provided meals for over 1,700 people in Market Harborough who were struggling to afford food.

Liz Mills, from the Jubilee Foodbank, said: “It cannot be right that an increasing number of people in our town are going hungry, having been swept into poverty by systems beyond their control. There are some amazing projects in the town helping to meet the need day to day, but we need to prevent food poverty, rather than put a sticking-plaster on it. We need the Government to lead on this, and really tackle the systems that are pushing people into deeper difficulty, so people can escape a cycle of poverty.”

The government pledged in 2015 to end hunger by 2030, but no plan for how that will happen has been developed.
