A man will appear at Leicester Magistrates Court accused of damaging a silhouette of a soldier at the War Memorial in Market Harborough town centre.

Leigh Marlow, 34, from Aikman Close, Leicester, is charged with criminal damage.

He was arrested after Police were called to a report of vandalism at the Memorial on The Square at 6.30pm on Friday.

The iconic 6ft metal figure of the ‘Tommy’ soldier was placed there last year by Harborough Council, as part of commemorations to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War.

It has been removed in the hope it can be repaired.
