Harborough Stands With Ukraine On Independence Day

Ukrainian Independence Day is being marked in Market Harborough today.

It is 32 years since the country broke away from the Soviet Union and as well as the Ukrainian flag flying in the town centre, lights on the Symington Building and The Square will glow in its yellow and blue colours tonight.

Today also marks the 18-month anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Over 280 Ukrainian refugees who have fled the country are now living in the Harborough District after being taken in by individuals and families, many still living with them.

Oleksii Pilevych is originally from Ukraine and has lived in Market Harborough with his family for the past three years.

Since the war started he has made several trips  to deliver aid to his homeland and has recently set-up a Facebook page to highlight the atrocities which continue to take place there

Cllr Knowles, Leader of Harborough District Council, said: “Our thoughts are with Ukraine today and in particular the Ukrainian visitors who we have been privileged to welcome into our Harborough District community.”
