A radio ham from Market Harborough is broadcasting something special this weekend to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

Andy Thomas, a member of the Welland Valley Amateur Radio Society, was awarded a special event licence to use the sequence GB 4 VVV, which in morse-code is the interval signal used by the BBC during war-time broadcasts to occupied Europe.

People across Harborough have been celebrating the 75th anniversary of VE Day at their homes today, with big public events cancelled because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Jack Strong, aged 12, from Great Oxendon played the Last Post in his garden at 2.55pm to honour those who lost their lives during the Second World War in Europe.
Jack, who goes to Leicester Grammar School in Great Glen, is a member of the 3rd Market Harborough Scouts:
A two minute silence to mark the 75th Anniversary of VE Day was observed in Market Harborough at 11am.
Some members of the town’s branch of the Royal British Legion used their daily exercise time to stand beside the Memorial Gardens gates to observe it.

The RAF Red Arrows flew over Market Harborough this morning, following their display in London for the 75th anniversary of VE Day.
The nine iconic red stunt planes passed overhead following a flypast over Westminster.

Harborough Police are reminding people not to breach the current lock-down rules to celebrate today’s 75th anniversary of VE Day.
People have been asked to mark the occasion at home to observe social-distancing rules and Pc Malc Roberts told Hfm there’s a good reason for that:
Police have the power to issue fines to people breaching the lock-down rules – since they came into force 24 have been handed out across Harborough and Wigston.
The first of three documentaries put together by people in Fleckney to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day will be aired tonight.

They will be shown live on Facebook over the weekend and then made available for people to watch at their leisure.
