Great Glen Asylum Housing Plans Dropped Following Opposition

Plans to house asylum seekers in Great Glen have been abandoned following strong opposition from local residents.
A property in the village had been identified as part of the Government’s Asylum Seeker Dispersal Programme, which aims to move asylum seekers out of hotels and into residential accommodation.
Residents argued that the villages’ rural locations and limited services made them unsuitable for the scheme.
The proposal – along with a similar plan for Kibworth that was withdrawn earlier this year – sparked concern locally, with more than 1,900 people signing a petition organised by Harborough MP Neil O’Brien.

Harborough District Council leader Simon Whelband has welcomed the decision and has written to accommodation provider Serco, urging it not to pursue any further asylum accommodation proposals elsewhere in the district:

Mr O’Brien described the outcome as a “victory for people power”.
The Home Office and Serco declined to comment.
