Fears Intensify Over Future Of Market Harborough’s Wilko Store

Fears of job losses in Market Harborough have intensified after a union said all Wilko stores will close by early October.

The GMB says redundancy is now likely for all 12,500 workers at the retailer’s 400 stores nationwide, after talks over a rescue deal collapsed.

The owner of HMV had been in discussions to buy part of the troubled homeware chain, which has a shop in St Mary’s Place.

Doug Putman was initially interested in half of the stores, but he now says the costs would be too high.

It is thought administrators are now talking to Poundland about offloading 100 stores and The Range are interested in buying the brand, but neither deal necessarily includes any of its workforce.
