Electricity Infrastructure Set For Major Upgrade

Electricity infrastructure through the HFM region is set to be upgraded as part of a major £600m project. 

The plan is part of National Grid’s ‘Great Grid Upgrade’ – which has been described as the biggest investment in Britain’s electricity network for a generation.

It will see the upgrade of existing power lines to enable them to carry more electricity along a route adjacent to the B6047 from Tilton on the Hill towards Market Harborough and onto Braybrooke.

The project also includes a new power line from Lincolnshire to Leicestershire, to carry more electricity from the east coast, where an increasing amount of offshore wind farms operate, as well as two new substations – one near Corby Glen, Lincolnshire and one near Wartnaby in Leicestershire.

National Grid say it will reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels, which are often expensive and affected by global market pressures and help to make Britain’s energy more secure and independent, delivering long-term benefits to bill payers.

A public consultation of the project is underway and a series of drop-in events have been organised by National Grid for people to find out more about the project and one is taking place this afternoon (Thursday) at Braybrooke Village Hall, between 2pm and 7pm.
