Disappointment as Market Harborough misses out on Town of Culture shortlist

Those behind Market Harborough’s bid to become the UK’s first Town of Culture say they are disappointed after the town failed to make the Government’s shortlist.
Harborough District Council led the bid, hoping to secure the £3 million top prize or one of two runners-up awards worth £250,000, to deliver a major programme of arts and cultural activities.
Councillor Phil Knowles, who helped put the bid together, says while the outcome is disappointing, the work carried out has still been worthwhile.

The bid, titled The Grand Union, was developed through a cross-sector partnership involving Creative Harborough, Harbs Collective, the Market Harborough Chamber of Trade and Commerce, Leicestershire County Council’s museum and libraries service, and the Canal & River Trust.
Supporters said the bid showcased the town’s rich heritage, thriving arts scene and strong community spirit.
Gareth Thomas, from the Market Harborough Chamber of Trade and Commerce, says he is disappointed but not entirely surprised by the decision:
Market Harborough was one of hundreds of towns to enter the competition, with the Government selecting just 15 to progress to the next stage.
Corby is among those to make the shortlist.
