Crossing Campaigners Hold Protest

Villagers in Lubenham have held a protest as their fight for a safe pedestrian crossing on the A4304 steps up.
Around 50 people gathered beside the road yesterday afternoon as children and parents were walking home from All Saints Primary School.

Leicestershire County Council says the need for a crossing does not meet their criteria for one, which takes into account traffic and pedestrian numbers and accident rates.
These schoolchildren spoke to Hfm about why a crossing is needed:
The road has been without a school crossing supervisor since the previous lollipop lady resigned over two years ago.
A spokesperson for the County Council said: “We’re aware of the concerns raised and the safety of pupils is an absolute priority for us. We’ll always consider requests for pedestrian crossings and we carried out an assessment on Main Street, Lubenham, but the results did not meet the necessary criteria for the provision of a safe crossing.
“However, there is a school safety zone in operation with an advisory 20mph speed limit in place which covers the school’s start and finish times and the school has joined the school camera car enforcement scheme.
“The protest has raised further awareness of the need for a school crossing patrol officer and we are working with the school to try to recruit for the position. We would encourage anyone interested to call 0116 305 6515 or email SCPService@leics.gov.uk.”
