Council Scraps Net-Zero Targets

West Northamptonshire Council has become the first Reform UK-led authority in the country to scrap net zero targets.
It will instead refocus sustainability resources on initiatives that cut energy bills, support local businesses, and improve quality of life.
The decision was approved at a meeting of the authority’s Cabinet last night, despite objections from other parties and disruption from clean air group, 1,000 Voices.
Council leader Mark Arnull said he was ‘proud to be flying the flag’ as one of the first councils to make the change.
The decision means the council will no longer be tied to a target to reach net zero by 2030, nor to encourage residents and businesses to do the same by 2045.
Existing strategies will be updated in line with the new approach, with reports referring to ‘Environmental Impact’ instead of ‘Climate Impact’.
The move comes in the same week Reform-led Leicestershire Council Council agreed to re-allocate £2m set a-side for Net-Zero projects into flood prevention work.
