Council Leader Hits Back After Calls To ‘Consider His Position’

The Leader of Harborough District Council has hit back after calls to “consider his position” following a by-election in Market Harborough.

The Conservatives won the seat in the Logan ward, bringing their total to 16 councillors – the same number as the ruling coalition administration led by Liberal Democrat Cllr Phil Knowles.

Cllr Simon Whelband, leader of the Conservative group, described the result as a “decisive rejection” of the Liberal Democrats, who came third, and said it sent a clear message about local opposition to Leicester City’s expansion plans.

He added that, with the council leader having lost his majority, Cllr Knowles “should consider his position.”

Cllr Knowles defended the coalition’s record, highlighting investments in leisure centres, community grants, and other local services, and said the group intends to continue delivering for residents.

No party currently has overall control of the council, and despite being the largest group, the Conservatives cannot take charge without reaching a deal with other parties or independent members.
