Concern Over Delay To Rollout Of New Trains

There are calls for the government in intervene over the delay in introducing new trains on the midland mainline.

East Midlands Railway’s fleet of Aurora Intercity trains were due start running this year, but will not enter service until sometime in 2026, after reportedly facing a series of teething problems during testing.

The bi-mode Class 810 trains will run using diesel or electric power following the electrification of the tracks between Kettering, Market Harborough and Wigston,

Harborough’s Conservative MP Neil O’Brien has branded the delay ‘unacceptable’ and also fears passengers could be left with outdated and unreliable trains, before the new fleet is introduced.

He says EMR will have to find temporary rolling stock when some of the existing Class 222 high-speed trains are withdrawn and transferred to another rail operator next month.

The Department for Transport told HFM testing and validation of EMR’s new Class 810 bi-mode trains is ongoing and a phased roll-out is planned for 2026.

A spokesperson added: “Passengers rightfully have high standards when it comes to the quality of trains and the reliability of services.

“We expect EMR to ensure that their new, modern intercity trains are introduced as quickly and smoothly as possible.

“EMR are already training drivers and onboarding crews so that, once the trains are ready, passengers can enjoy a service without unnecessary delays or disruptions.”
