Concern At Lack Of Action To Deal With Kibworth Pollution

There are new calls for action to deal with air pollution along a stretch of the A6 through Kibworth.

Level of nitrogen dioxide, caused by vehicle fumes, are still breaching the national limit on part of Leicester Road.

Harborough District Council declared an Air Quality Management Area in 2017 and a report concluded improvements to three junctions would help deal with the issue.

Leader Phil King told Hfm it is Leicestershire County Council highways who should be acting:

Leicestershire County Council say the district council is responsible for securing funding the deliver schemes identified to address the issue.

Cllr Trevor Pendleton, county council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “It’s the district council’s responsibility to identify and produce a plan, including actions to be taken, to mitigate air quality issues.

“They are also responsible for securing funding to deliver schemes identified to address these issues.

“We’ll always endeavour to see how any schemes developed can assist in improving air quality and we’ll continue to support them in their plan for Kibworth.”

• Air quality has significantly improved in Lutterworth, for the second year running, according to annual data just published.  The Air Quality – Annual Status Report, published by Harborough District Council, shows that, for the second time since 2001 when an Air Quality Management Area was declared in Lutterworth, there has been no exceedance in the annual average levels of nitrogen dioxide in 2018 and 2019.
