A blaze which engulfed a pub in Lutterworth earlier this week started as a chimney fire.

The Shambles on Bell Street was badly damaged by the fire on Monday, which tore through the roof of the historic 16th century thatched building.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service has now completed an investigation into the blaze.

A spokesperson told HFM: “The cause was a chimney fire that had breached the chimney stack in the roof space and spread to thatch.

“There are no further hot spots identified and this incident has now been handed over to the Insurance company and on site security.”

As the future of the pub remains unclear, the community has rallied round to raise over £2,000 to support Denise and George East, who ran the pub and also lived there.

A Crowdfunding appeal was launched following the fire.
