Brooke House Quash Rumours Over Coronavirus

Written by on 4th February 2020

Brooke House College in Market Harborough has moved to quash rumours and offer reassurance over the Coronavirus.

Mike Oliver, Principal of the college, which has 20 Chinese students out of a population of just over 300, has spoken out after being contacted by some local people and posts of social media, fearing some had been struck down with the potentially deadly virus.

Last night, two oriental-looking male students, aged 16 and 17, had eggs thrown out them outside Tesco on The Square, by a group of youths who shouted at them. The incident, which Mr Oliver believes is linked to the misguided views, has been reported to Police.

He spoke to Hfm:

Mr Oliver says there is misconception that a larger number of his students are from China, when it fact youngsters from 58 countries attend the college, including from other areas of south-east Asia, including Vietnam, Thailand and Hong Kong.

The College has put several measures in place relating to travel to and from China and says it takes its responsibilities for the safety of its pupils, staff and the community within which they live very seriously, and remains in contact with authorities to ensure its response is up-to-date and proportionate.
