Harborough Police Sergeant Supports Night Lights Call

The Deputy Commander of Harborough Police is joining calls for the streetlights to be switched back-on overnight in our town estates and villages.

It follows another spate of van break-ins in Market Harborough, Fleckney and Great Glen.

Sergeant Kev Manship cites a recent study by the College of Policing which found that having street lighting does cut down some forms of criminal activity – such as theft crime and sexual offences:

Leicestershire County Council took the decision to switch off streetlights, apart from at key junctions, on housing estates, a few years ago, to save money.

A spokesman told Hfm: We work in close collaboration with the police to ensure that part-night lighting is effective for communities across the county.

“While there is no evidence in Leicestershire to indicate that lights that are turned off overnight cause an increase in the crime rate, we review each request on an individual basis to assess if changes need to be made, and, where needed, put these in place.”
