New inclusive play equipment installed at Welland Park

Children and families are already enjoying a range of new inclusive play equipment at Welland Park in Market Harborough following a £50,000 investment by Harborough District Council.

The improvements are the first phase of a wider programme to make the park more accessible, helping children of all ages and abilities to play, explore and learn together.

Funded through the council’s capital programme, the new facilities include a wheelchair-accessible all-terrain play vehicle, sensory play panels, musical play equipment, a sign language learning panel and a Braille alphabet and number board.

Other additions include a spinning bowl, an accessible playhouse with sensory features, a bug play panel, a wobbly mirror and musical flowers designed to encourage interactive play.

Councillor David Page, Cabinet Lead for Neighbourhood Services, said the investment demonstrated the council’s commitment to creating more inclusive outdoor spaces.

He said: “This is a significant investment in one of our most popular parks and demonstrates our commitment to ensuring every child has the opportunity to enjoy high-quality play facilities.

“This administration has made improving our parks and open spaces a priority, and these new facilities are helping us meet a long-standing need for more inclusive and accessible play provision across the district.”

The council has also confirmed it will invest a further £250,000 to upgrade play areas across the Harborough district, with a particular focus on improving facilities for children and adults with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Further improvements are also planned at Welland Park, including a children’s trail, carved wooden animal sculptures, sensory planting, willow arches, accessible picnic tables and upgraded litter bins.

The latest investment forms part of the council’s wider programme to improve parks and open spaces across the district, with Love Parks Week running until August 2nd.
