Town centre roadworks finish early after trader concerns

Roadworks in Market Harborough town centre have been completed a day earlier than planned, to the relief of traders and drivers.
The drainage repairs were due to finish tomorrow, but the work by Leicestershire County Council was completed earlier today.
The early finish follows concerns from businesses on Adam and Eve Street, who had criticised the disruption caused by a road closure since Monday.

Traders claimed little work had been carried out after the road was closed on Monday, with some saying the restrictions were affecting trade.
The works also caused a lane closure near The Square, with temporary traffic lights leading to delays for drivers approaching the town centre.
Leicestershire County Council said it understood the concerns of local businesses but explained the repairs needed to be carried out in stages and that traffic measures had to remain in place for safety.

Cllr David Page said he had raised residents’ concerns directly with senior highways officers after complaints about the pace of the work.
He said: “Nothing frustrates motorists more than sitting in queues when they cannot see any work taking place.”
Cllr Page thanked the county council for investigating the issue and working with the contractor to bring the completion date forward.
He added: “These repairs are important, but so is maintaining public confidence that roadworks are being actively managed.”
The council thanked traders, residents and road users for their patience while the essential improvements were carried out.
