Extreme Heat Warning Issued as Temperatures Set to Soar

Residents across the HFM region are being urged to take extra care as temperatures are forecast to climb into the high 30s this week.

An amber heat-health alert remains in force across Leicestershire, while parts of  Northamptonshire will move into a rare red warning area from tomorrow morning.

Forecasters say temperatures could reach around 37°C in Market Harborough by Thursday, with some areas of the Midlands potentially seeing highs of 39°C.

The Local Resilience Forum for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland is urging people to stay hydrated, avoid spending long periods outdoors during the hottest part of the day, and check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours and relatives.

There are also renewed warnings about the dangers of swimming in open water following a number of recent drownings during periods of hot weather.

The heat-health warning states that significant impacts are possible, particularly for health and social care services, and that people of all ages could be affected by the extreme temperatures.

Rail passengers are being urged only to travel if it is essential tomorrow and Thursday amid the soaring temperatures.

East Midlands Railway said any customers who needed to travel should expect disruption and warned them to travel before midday before temperatures peak.
