Ex-Wilko Workers To Share £2m Payout

Thousands of former Wilko workers will share a £2m payout after a legal case ruling.
The GMB union says an employment tribunal found the retailer had not properly consulted with workers before it went bust in 2023 and closed all its stores, including in Market Harborough.

About 9,000 former staff who worked in a store with 20 or more people will get four days’ pay, while roughly 1,100 employees who worked in a distribution centre or support centre role will get 13 days’ pay, according to the union.
The business, founded in Leicester in 1930, collapsed into administration in August 2023, putting 12,500 jobs at risk.
A month later it closed down all its 400 stores, including the branch in St Mary’s Place.
Former Wilko worker and union representative David Bartlett said the award was ‘the very least Wilko workers deserve’ and added: ‘It has been a long, hard slog getting this money’.
The Wilko brand was subsequently sold to retailer The Range.
