House Fire Caused By Candle

A fire that damaged a house in Market Harborough was started by a candle.

Three fire crews tackled the flames in the upstairs of the property in Meadow Street yesterday afternoon and an aerial platform ladder was also sent to the scene.

No-one was injured.

An investigation conducted today by Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service concluded a candle on the first floor of the property ignited items before the fire spread, creating a large amount of smoke.

The blaze broke out just before 3.15pm and left the house with 80 per cent smoke damage and thirty per cent fire damage.

The incident has promoted LFRS to issue safety advice over the use of candles:

• Make sure candles are secured in a proper holder and away from materials that may catch fire – like curtains.
• Put candles out when you leave the room, and make sure they’re put out completely at night.
• Use a snuffer or a spoon to put out candles. It’s safer than blowing them out when sparks can fly.
• Young children and pets should not be left alone with lit candles.
