Concern At Plan To Scrap Zebra Crossing Near New School

There are concerns at plans to scrap the installation of a zebra crossing near a new primary school in Market Harborough.

The safety measure on Airfield Road was included in the original plan for Wellington Place Primary School, but developers say there is no longer adequate space to accommodate it.

Leicestershire County Council has proposed removing provision of the crossing, but councillors are unhappy at the idea.

A report presented to members of the authority’s Development Control Committee stated that as building work has progressed, “calculations” have showed that a “formal” crossing was not required for the school, and that pedestrian crossing requirements could be fulfilled “satisfactorily” by widening pavements along Airfield Road, known as “build outs”.

However councillors voiced their concerns and voted to defer making a decision on the matter, requesting consideration is given to whether there is an alternative location for the crossing near-by.
