Former Children’s Home Set To Be Brought Back Into Use

A former children’s home in Market Harborough is set to be brought back into use.

Leicestershire County Council plans to use Welland House on St Mary’s Road as a short-stay residential home for parents with young children in need of support.

The building has stood empty since the home was closed down a few years ago and a planning application has been lodged with Harborough District Council for the change of use.

Councillor Deborah Taylor, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for children and family services, said: “The purpose of the application is for the building to be brought back into use as a short-stay residential home for parents with young children who may not have had the best life experiences and are in need of support to help them improve their parenting skills.

“They will be able to live at the site for a short period of time, where they will get all the one-to-one help they need to allow them to become the best parents that they can be.

“There will be up to three families living at the home at any one time, as well as support staff at all times. A dedicated manager will be available to support and advise staff.

“We are very pleased to be able to offer this residential service, which will enable us to offer a lifeline to those parents and children who are most in need of help, as well as enabling parents to stay close to their wider support networks.”
