Cash Boost In Bid To Retain Rural Bus Services

The government has awarded the county council a further 1.79 million pounds to help retain and improve rural bus services across Leicestershire.

The funding for the years 2024 and 2025 follows a similar amount awarded earlier this year, which led the authority to ‘pause’ a review of its subsidised services, including services in and around Market Harborough, which risked being cut under the cost-saving plans.

Cllr Ozzy O’Shea, cabinet member for highways and transport said: “We’re very pleased to get a further £1.79M from the Government and we’ll be working on our Passenger Transport Policy Strategy to reflect what the Government wants us to achieve with this money.

“It’s our chance to shape the public transport offer across rural Leicestershire so communities can have long-term sustainable buses whilst ensuring we do not continue to pay for the lowest value services.”
