Work To Transform Canal Towpath In Market Harborough Progressing Well

Work to transform a stretch of canal towpath in Market Harborough is progressing well.

The Canal and River Trust is upgrading and widening the 2km route from Union Wharf and sections of the path have been closed since last month while it takes place.

The stretch of the path, popular with pedestrians and cyclists, has historically become very muddy in winter months and the work will enable it to be used all-year-round, including by those with wheelchairs or buggies.

Improvements to boat moorings are also being made, with the £900,000 project set to be completed by the end of August.

Funding for the scheme has come from the Department for Transport, through Sustrans’ Paths For Everyone programme, and through ‘Section 106’ developer contributions from the Wellington Place housing development, via Harborough District Council.

The section of towpath also forms part of Route 6 of the National Cycle Network, which connects London to the Peak District, as well as being a popular path with locals looking for a green, traffic-free route into town.
