Temperatures Set To Hit 37°C Across HFM Region Today

It is set to be the hottest day ever with temperatures across the HFM region set to reach 37°C today.

A Red Warning for extreme heat is in place for the first time, meaning conditions could even pose a risk to fit and healthy people.

Mike Sandys, Director of Public Health for Leicestershire, has this advice:

Emergency services have warned people not to cool off in open water like reservoirs and ponds.

Gritters drafted in to spread sand on hot roads

Gritters have been taken out of hibernation to stop roads melting in the sweltering heat by spreading sands on them.

Highway teams in Leicestershire and Northamptonshire have already treated some routes and estimate road surface temperatures will reach 60°C over the next couple of days.

Cllr Ozzy O’ Shea, cabinet member for highways and transport at Leicestershire COunty Council, said: “So far, we have only had to treat one road due to the hot weather.

“We will continue to monitor roads across our highways network as temperatures are forecast to rise.

“The roads most vulnerable are those with a newer surface and we have crews ready to respond by dusting to prevent problems arising”

Trian services from Market Harborough are disrupted today as heat-related speed restrictions are in force along the Midland Mainline.

East Midlands Railway say fewer services are operating, due to journey times being significantly longer.

The first of a series of free sports events for youngsters across Harborough have been cancelled because of the hot weather.

Leicester Riders basketball team were due to be at Warwick Park in Kibworth this afternoon at in Thurnby tomorrow.

Organisers hope to rearrange the sessions for later in the school summer holidays.

Market Harborough tip has closed early today and will do so tomorrow (Tuesday) because of the extreme heat.

However, the Household Waste and Recycling facility on Riverside will open at hour earlier tomorrow at 8am and close at 12 noon (last entry 11.50am) .
