Market Harborough’s historic St John Ambulance Station is set to be sold at auction next week.

The iconic building on Abbey Street was put up for sale earlier this year, having been the charity’s base in the town for nearly 100 years.

Bids are expected to start at £270,000 when the premises is put under the hammer next Tuesday, at an on-line auction hosted by a London-based property sales company.

The ambulance station was given grade-two listed status last year, after Historic England deemed it one of the last surviving buildings of its kind in the country, meaning there will be restrictions on what changes can be made to its exterior through any new use of the premises.

St John Ambulance took the decision to sell the base because of the impact of the pandemic on the charity’s finances.

Operational support director, Mark Squires said: “It’s always sad to say goodbye to properties – especially one with such a proud history as our base in Market Harborough – but the financial impact of the pandemic has made us take some difficult decisions to reduce our charity’s running costs.

“Despite these premises’ closure, St John Ambulance remains active in the local area. We will continue supporting the community through first aid, training, and other work that helps improve people’s health and saves lives.”
