Rod’s Big Fundraiser For Charity That ‘Saved His Life’

A man who defied the odds to survive an explosion in Market Harborough is preparing to embark on a big fundraiser for the Air Ambulance.

Rod Martin says he owes his life to the service, after he suffered 52% burns when he was engulfed in flames at his garage workshop in St Mary’s Road, in October 2005.

He had been welding a barrel containing heating oil when it exploded.

After being rushed to hospital in Kettering he was then flown to a specialist hospital in Birmingham by helicopter – a journey that took just over 12 minutes.

He underwent a number of operations, including one to save his leg, which was left seriously damaged.

Rod, from Ashley, has supported the Air Ambulance Service charity ever since the accident, raising around £25,000 to date and this Sunday will set off on a 1,500 mile sponsored motorbike ride to Scotland and back, taking in the ‘Scottish Coastal 500’ on the way.
