2,600 Pupils Self-Isolating Across Leicestershire

2,600 pupils across Leicestershire are currently self-isolating after coming into contact with people who tested positive for coronavirus.

There were 281 cases in county schools in June – with 45 staff members and 235 students becoming infected with the virus, including a number at the Kibworth Mead Academy.

To put the figures in context, Leicestershire County Council say there are around 96,000 children who attend county schools each day.

Cabinet member for Children and Family Services, councillor Deborah Taylor said: “Schools have been continuing to put measures in place to prevent the spread of the virus and have been doing a great job at managing cases when they occur.

“Credit is also due to our children and young people who have taken home-schooling in their stride when they have needed to self-isolate.

“We can, however, all play a part in helping to reduce the spread of Covid-19.

“Half of the cases across the county are in the 30-and-under age group, essentially those people who have not been vaccinated and those who have only had one jab.

“We are continuing to urge parents to be vigilant in checking for symptoms and following the guidance put in place by both schools and the Government.

“It is still really important that we all remain cautious and learn to live with this virus, even as lockdown restrictions ease.”

At present no county schools have been forced to close entirely as a result of Covid-19 pressure, with the summer holidays fast approaching.
