Leisure Centre Operator Backs Campaign To Re-Open Gyms During Lockdown

The operator of Harborough Leisure Centre is backing a call for gyms to be allowed to re-open during the lockdown.

Everyone Active wants them recognised as an ‘essential service.’

The company, who run the facility as well as Lutterworth Sports Centre, on behalf of Harborough District Council, says the closures of gyms across the country is having a tougher effect on people during this lockdown, compared with the last and impacting on people’s mental health.

Bosses are encouraging members to sign a petition calling on the government to allow gyms to re-open, which has so far attracted over 600,000 signatures.

Following the reopening of leisure facilities in July, Everyone Active implemented a host of strict operational measures to ensure safety across gym, swimming, group exercise and activities to protect both customers and colleagues.

Research by industry body ukactive shows that 58% of people managed their mental health by being active during the last lockdown, emphasising the role gyms and leisure facilities can play in providing vital sanctuaries for health and wellbeing this winter.
