Pub Can Keep Outside Bar In Converted Storage Container

Owners of the Red Lion pub in Great Bowden have welcomed a decision that means they can continue to use an outside bar and kitchen – within a converted storage container – when the pub can re-open.

A retrospective planning application has been approved by Harborough District Council with the condition it must be painted white, instead of the current red.

It was a close decision, with five members of the planning committee voting in favour and four against, after some concerns about the structure were expressed.

The pub says the facility is essential for the viability of the business during the pandemic – spokesman Dylan Bogg said: “Obviously, we’re delighted that permission has been granted for the outside kitchen/bar.  It’s already turned into popular and well regarded destination in the area.

“And, as we all know, supporting businesses at this time should be a key priority for any Council.”

If planning permission had not been granted, the pub is likely to have been ordered to remove the container.

A separate retrospective planning application to use another outside area of the pub as a covered space for customers is still to be considered.
