Government Handout Just ‘A Drop In The Ocean’

Harborough District Council has been given an extra £100,000 of government funding to help it cope with the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic – although it’s been described as ‘a drop in the ocean.’
It takes the financial support provided since March to just under £1.2m, but still leaves the authority over a million pounds out of pocket.
That is as a result of lost income, including when parking charges were suspended, and increased costs, like the continued operation of a Community Hub, to help the elderly and vulnerable.
£100,000 was the minimum amount given to councils across the country, with many receiving substantially more.
Leader of the Opposition, Cllr Phil Knowles, gave his reaction to Hfm:
Leicestershire Council Council has been given £3.1m in the latest handout.
