Over 800 New Trees To Be Planted In Market Harborough

Written by on 19th October 2020

Over 11,000 trees are being given to 59 schools and community groups across Leicestershire and Northamptonshire.

It is part of the Woodland Trust’s bid to plant 50 million across the UK over the next five years, to help tackle climate change.

The Market Harborough C of E Academy is being given 420 trees for its school grounds, Welland Park Academy will be handed 15, and 420 will be planted around the playing fields in Naseby.

The ambitious plan announced today is part of the conservation charity’s Big Climate Fightback, which will also see a new £1m “emergency tree fund” trialled in 12 council areas.

More local schools and community groups are also being encouraged to get involved.

Carol Honeybun-Kelly from The Woodland Trust says the campaign is really important:

Covid-hit 2020 has been a tough year for so many, not least in woodland conservation where UK tree planting is down by 30% in the first quarter of 2020 compared to 2019 and with more challenges on communities to get out to plant in large numbers.
