Lives are being put a risk by reckless driving on the A6 in Kibworth.
There have been several incidents of concern recently, including speeding cars travelling on the wrong side of the road.
It has led to renewed calls for average speed cameras to be installed.
Kevin Feltham, Chairman of Kibworth Harcourt Parish Council, fears there will be a serious crash:
Councillor Trevor Pendleton, cabinet member for highways and transport at Leicestershire County Council, said: “The county council works in partnership with the police as part of the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Road Safety Partnership to reduce the number of people killed and injured on the road network.
“We have found that the majority of motorists comply with the existing speed limits on the A6 through Kibworth, especially when compared to other areas across the county. Unfortunately, there is a stubborn minority who disregard the speed limit, endangering the lives of road users, and it is for the police to enforce these restrictions, as is their duty.
“We will be looking to run our Community Speed Watch scheme again, when government guidance allows us to do so and we are continuing to trial average speed cameras at locations across the county, for example on the A6 Harborough Road in Oadby, to make the roads as safe as they can be.
“Any new camera sites will be put forward in compliance with police speed enforcement criteria and we are assessing the data from our average speed camera trials as to whether the scheme can be rolled out to other sites in Leicestershire, but this is dependent on HM Treasury changing their policy to allow fines to be retained locally to pay for the rollout of new speed cameras for those communities in Leicestershire who are clamouring for action.”
