Special Open Weekends At Foxton Locks!

There will be the unique chance to step into empty locks at Foxton at a series of Open Weekends.

The Canal and River Trust is hosting them while water is drained from the historic flight, for restoration work.

There will be a host of other activities on offer for the whole family at the Open Weekends, including photography, fishing, traditional canal painting and Lego big builds – with different activities each weekend.

The work, costing £150,000, is seeing new lock gates lifted into seven of the site’s ten locks as well as repairs to historic brickwork and other parts of the lock structures.

Phil Mulligan, director for the Canal & River Trust in the East Midlands, said: “People may have visited Foxton Locks many times before but they’ve probably never seen it quite like this, there’s nothing quite like descending down into one of the famous locks. It’s fascinating looking up at the giant oak lock gates and in some places you can even see the mason’s marks in the stonework from when the locks were built over 200 years ago.”

Activities are taking place each Saturday and Sunday from 22nd February through to 8^th March.

This weekend’s planned event has been cancelled because of the bad weather forecast from Storm Dennis.
