Controversial Bin Charge Plan Scrapped

Controversial plans to charge people moving into new homes across Harborough for wheelie bins have been scrapped.

A number of concerns have led to u-turn by Harborough Council, despite the fact it would have saved the authority over £100,000 a year, including the fact the government is working on a new Waste Strategy, which could impact on the way Councils operate bin collection services.

They were also fears bins could have become a target for thieves.

If the move had gone ahead, new residents would have had to pay up to £94 for the delivery of general waste and recycling bins.

Another proposal to charge householders for extra recycling bins has also been abandoned, although the Council’s Cabinet has agreed the size of extra-large 360 litre black bins, made available for homes with 5 or more residents, will be reduced in size to 240 litres, to encourage more recycling & reduce waste going to landfill.
