Sport and community facilities across Harborough are to be boosted by grants totaling over £700,000.

In Kibworth, the Cricket Club is getting £60,000 to help towards its new pavilion project and £26,000 will pay for a new multi-use games area at the Warwick Road Recreation Ground, after it was handed to Kibworth Harcourt Parish Council.

In Market Harborough, Robert Smyth Academy has been awarded £50,000 towards the upgrade of netball and tennis courts and in Scraptoft, facilities at Aylestone St James Rugby Club will be boosted by £20,000.

Grants have been awarded by Harborough Council, using cash from developers who have built locally.

Councillor Michael Rickman (pictured), Harborough District Council’s Cabinet member for communities, said: “This is a sizeable amount of money which will make a huge positive impact to help create and support infrastructure in areas where housing has been developed. We will endeavor to make sure that areas that take development continue to benefit in this way.”

Other groups to benefit are:

  • The Hub at Scraptoft – given £536,108 to increase the size of the hall and create a new kitchen, lounge area and storage areas
  • Lutterwoth Cemetery – £18,254 to provide railings for Lutterworth Cemetery
