Major Development Faces Council Opposition At Appeal

Harborough District Council has formally set out its opposition to controversial plans for hundreds of homes on the edge of Bushby.

Developers Mulberry Land have lodged an appeal after the council failed to determine the planning application within the required timescale.

The proposals cover around 160 acres of mainly agricultural land south of  the A47 Uppingham Road and include up to 900 homes, a primary school, local centre, community facilities and open space.

More than 200 people have objected to the plans, while over 1,000 have signed a petition against the development.

The council’s Planning Committee has now confirmed that, had it been able to determine the application, outline planning permission would have been refused.

The reason for refusal is that the developers have failed to demonstrate that the significant impacts of the scheme on the transport network, including capacity and congestion, can be mitigated, alongside concerns over highway safety.

The authority will defend its position during the appeal, while the reason for refusal will continue to be reviewed throughout the process.

The appeal has been made to the Planning Inspectorate, with a planning inspector now set to decide the application and a hearing due to take place in March next year.
