Concern Mounts Over Impact Of Coronavirus On Council Coffers

Concern is mounting about the financial impact of the Coronavirus pandemic on Harborough District Council.
Latest figures show the authority will be left with a funding gap of £1.6m, unless it receives more government support.

Increased costs to help people in the community and lost income, from things like parking charges, which were halted for four months during the lock-down, means the pandemic has so-far cost the authority £2.8m.
The government had pledged councils would be fully reimbursed for all costs and losses, but so-far has covered less than half the figure.
The Council is continuing to push for more money, or will be forced to use reserves and review planned investment in services to balance the books.
