A young woman from Market Harborough has been left temporarily paralysed from the waist down after being seriously injured at the Hallaton Bottle Kicking event.

Alexi Winship, 23, was taken to hospital after suffering a serious head injury and bleed on her spine when she got caught-up in the rugby-style contest, while spectating in fields between Hallaton and Medbourne on Easter Monday.

Organisers of the event say it is widely publicised that anyone entering the field of play does so at their own risk.

Alexi, who is expected to make a fully recovery, is continuing to receive treatment at Leicester Royal Infirmary and wanted to speak about what happened to raise awareness for people going to the event in the future:

She spoke to HFM about what happened:

The Hallaton Bottle Kicking dates back 2,000 years and is one of the oldest continued customers of its kind, with medical teams on-hand to deal with any emergencies.

Organisers have wished Alexi a speedy recovery and stress it is made clear through signage and promotional material that anyone entering the field of play does so at their own risk.

In addition, they say the warning states competitors and spectators should take extreme caution during the contest, as serious injury can occur and neither the organisers or landowners can be held liable for any injury.
