Popular community park celebrates 90th birthday

Harborough District Council has marked 90 years of Welland Park in Market Harborough.

At a special anniversary event in the park today (Thursday 7th August), chairman Cllr Peter James cut a cake made by The Welland Park Café to mark the occasion.

A flowerbed depicting the number 90 and a decorated present made of wood were also unveiled.

Welland Park is the largest park in Market Harborough and is managed by Harborough District Council. It officially opened in June 1935, transforming seven acres of fields into a community space featuring formal gardens, a bandstand, tennis courts, a running track, bowling greens, an ornamental pond and an Art Deco pavilion.

Some additions and improvements in recent years have been the introduction of a Petanque Court, accessible toilet facilities, wildflower planting and the installation of new children’s play equipment.

Many volunteer groups such as Market Harborough in Bloom, River Clean and Rotary Club of Market Harborough are also integral to the upkeep of the park.

Cllr Peter James, Chairman of Harborough District Council, said: “As we celebrate this milestone, we reflect on the history and contributions of those who have helped shape the park into the treasured green space it is now. Welland Park is a celebration of nature, diversity and community.”
